‘Remembering with Homage’ – Vesna Todorović, art critic, Belgrade, april 2017

Few people in their lifetime get to know their hometown completely. Especially, when it comes to a city like Belgrade, a historically multifaceted, two-million big metropolis. One would need to live a lifetime in the city while at the same time be filled with an insatiable curiosity to discover every corner.

Experience teaches us that memories of a city are tied to more remarkable locations, distinctive details, frequent visiting and moments that had personal significance to us. However, when we “loudly” evoke memories, we do so for places that represent beauty and harmony and are deeply etched in our minds. Locations to which we return time and time again as to a spring welling up to satisfy our thirst and invigorate our soul, when they are far away from us, attainable only in memories.

Vesna Klačar-Nedimović, a Serbian and Australian artist, translates memories of her native Belgrade into her art, as etchings and digital prints. Her emotional relics are transformed into stylised attractive architecture of historical-artistic pedigree, such as of the  famous Belgrade court architect Jovan Ilkić, active in Belgrade and Serbia in the late 19th and early 20th century. This representative selection of architecture chosen from the heart of the city not only reveals her favourite passages, but also a desire for the world to see how beautiful her Belgrade is.

During her pilgrimage to Belgrade in 2010 she personally photographed interesting and richly decorated facades such as the Cathedral Church (Saborna Crkva), the house of merchant Ljubomir Crvenčanin (today Hotel Aleksandar Palas) in King Peter Street (Ulica Kralja Petra), the Belgrade City Library (formerly famous hotel “Serbian Crown”), as well as the endowments of Nikola Spasić in Knez Mihailova street. These buildings are the base of her motives in etchings and digital prints. The artist’s attention is focused on the windows, which have the most luxurious decorations, but are also light sources to the building’s interior, and so in this way she establishes a perceptive artistic dialogue.

Interestingly, Vesna’s approach consists of a consistently implemented art game whereby she overlays each motif with a picturesque network, created with a topographic map of the city from 1967. On the map, the artist view is directed to the dominant promontory with the dense urban structure of the old city centre, at the confluence of Sava and Danube Rivers. This discreetly emphasises that precisely at this place are the chosen buildings. This map symbolically alludes to the passage of time in the long life of the city, and on the psychological self-preservation of the artist in relation to her moment of confrontation with the flood of emotions.

Vesna Klačar-Nedimović’s artworks are created in two ways – the traditional method of etching, in a very effective black-white-grey combination, where the thick white city map dominates, with a shape resembling the rich vegetation of Belgrade, and by modern digital means, where the facades become more apparent and joyful, with delicate but bright, sunny colours. The artist further played with bringing rhythm and dynamics in compositional presentation, depicting the same motif, or alternating two different ones, in the form of horizontal polyptych.

Insight into the careful design and execution of this cycle of works of art by Vesna Klačar-Nedimović suggests the multi-layered role and impact of her memory of the city and its values, where in addition, the artworks act as a homage to recognise the city’s beauty and the artist’s memories.

English

Izložbu ‘Fragmenti II: Beograd’ je svečano otvorila Ambasadorka Australije u Srbiji Nj. E. Julija Fini 26. april 2017. godine.

Australian Ambassador to Serbia Officially Opens Exhibition ‘Fragments II: Belgrade’

Srpski

The exhibition “Fragments II: Belgrade’ was officially opened by the Australian Ambassador to Serbia H. E. Julia Feeney on 26 April, 2017.

At the opening the Secretary for Culture of Belgrade Ivona Jevtić and Director of PE “Belgrade Fortress” Peter Andrijašević expressed their delight in being a part of the cultural exchange.

Artworks featured in the open air exhibition in Kalemegdan Park are by Serbian-Australian artist Vesna Klačar-Nedimović, who dedicated her series of prints ‘Fragments II: Belgrade’ to her hometown.

H. E. Julia Feeney said that the Serbian diaspora has for generations contributed to multicultural Australia and she believes that this exhibition will bring the two nations together.

“What a glorious day to open an exhibition. Obviously, the Australian Embassy is very pleased to be involved, and in such a glorious place. While it’s true that probably Australia could not get any further away than Serbia, the people have very strong links and I think it’s through culture and art that these links are improved. It’s true that the Serbian diaspora in Australia, through all walks of life, have made a very positive contribution to what we now call multicultural, modern, contemporary Australia. We can now formally open the exhibition. Vesna’s love for Belgrade shines through this exhibition and I’d like to congratulate her on the work and officially open it. Enjoy”. – Julia Feeney

Secretary for Culture, Ivona Jevtić stressed the importance of international cultural exchange.

“Culture and art are the link that best brings together different cultures and nations. I sincerely hope that after this exhibition we have established better relations, not only between Australia and Serbia, but also all countries. Our goal is to enhance cultural exchange on an international level”. – Ivona Jevtić

Director of PE “Belgrade Fortress” Petar Andrijašević said that Vesna is an artist who through art facilitates cultural collaboration.

“Welcome to Kalemegdan and the opening of the exhibition by the Australian artist who herself says that her hometown Belgrade remains in her heart.  PE “Belgrade Fortress” wanted to showcase Vesna Klačar-Nedimović’s unique experience of Belgrade. She is an artist that through her artwork brings together two nations, Serbia and Australia and strengthens their cultural collaboration. As a testament to that, thank you to H.E. Julia Feeney, Australian Ambassador to Serbia for being here today, and I hope that we will collaborate in the future. We aim to best present Kalemegdan park to domestic and foreign tourists and the open air gallery we have here on the Sava promenade is proving to be popular. I am sure this exhibition will be no different”.

Srpska dijaspora generacijama pozitivno doprinosi multikulturnoj Australiji.
– NJ.E. Julija Fini, ambasadorka Australije u Srbiji-

Exhibition Fragments II: Belgrade is coming to Belgrade

Srpski

Vesna Klačar-Nedimović, in partnership with the Public Enterprise ‘Belgrade Fortress’ presents art exhibition ‘Fragments II: Belgrade’.

The open air exhibition by Vesna Klačar-Nedimović is an integral part of the program “Days of Belgrade”

Klačar-Nedimović dedicated her series of artworks Fragments II: Belgrade to her hometown after being inspired by Belgrade’s historical architecture on her holiday in 2010.

Even though she moved to Australia in 1991 she often says “I left Belgrade, but Belgrade never left me”.

Olivera Vučković, Program Coordinator at Public Enterprise “Belgrade Fortress” says she recognised the story of an artist living thousands of kilometres away but still inspired by the Belgrade soul. Her poetic portrayal of her city through photos and maps as prints will be enjoyed by the many visitors of Kalemegdan Park.

The exhibition features traditional and contemporary prints on large panels.

The Sava Promenade at Kalemegdan Park is a destination, which carries a rich history and is a must see in Belgrade, popular with locals and tourists.

The series of artworks “Fragments II: Belgrade” show an architectural façade overlaid with a map that describes the way the city is threaded into the artist’s memory, exploring her personal, familial and cultural ties to the city of her youth.

Klačar-Nedimović overwrites her images and text rather like the process of layering contemporary cultural over all that has gone before. In this context the use of text adds information and an entry point that is both evocative and documentary, the organic and sinuous topographic lines of natural features and rivers alike overlay architectural images that are man-made in their perfect curves and straightness.

In Klačar-Nedimović’s images we may all access the familiar sense of retracing the past in our present (Louise Martin-Chew, IMPRINT Magazine, vol 48, no. 3, 2013).
